A Wulfskarl Rider is the non-changing companion of a Wulfskarg pack, the shapeshifting Rangers of Rhegan. A rider follows after the shapeshifters, carrying food, clothing and gear for the packmembers and acting as voice, ambassador and errand boy. This role is considered a great honour for most Rangers as they become the human aspect of the shapeshifters. Some failed shapeshifters serve as Wulfskarl Riders as they have some idea what each packmember experiences in the shift between man and wolf, as well as keeping the secret of the change. For some, however, this is punishment for the inability to change.

Alecto is a failed shapeshifter, stuck between wolf and human form. He has miscoloured eyes (one amber and shaped like a wolf's) and has heightened senses of smell and hearing. However, he has a poor perception of colour. Older brother to Taynor and brother-in-law to Gretham, Alecto is shown here with his horse Pip.
